Preparing and sending files

We will manage your project from end to end and ensure that you have nothing to worry about, however, the one thing we can't do directly is to prepare your artwork. We have outlined below our file submission requirements and listed some links to technical information that will help to ensure you get your file over to us in the right format.

File Preperation Checklist

Important

  • Does your document size match the book size exactly?
  • Do the number of pages in your artwork match exactly the number you have configured in your book?
  • Does your document have bleed settings applied? Bleed allows colour or images to run off the edge of the page to allow for movement when trimming.
  • If you're not supplying a pdf file have you included all images and associated fonts that we will need?
  • If you are supplying a pdf file have you made sure that fonts and images are embedded?

Useful

  • Images should be saved as TIF files to maintain optimum quality.
  • Resolution for black and white printing should be between 300-600dpi, ideally saved as greyscale or bitmap.
  • For high quality, crisp diagrams within the body of the book, create vector graphics using Adobe Illustrator, ensuring that you only use black, and that you convert all text to outlines.
  • Resolution for colour printing should be 600dpi, saved as CMYK.
  • Spot colours should be converted to CMYK.
  • To obtain areas of solid black (not including text), use CMYK settings of 20% Cyan, 20% Magenta, 20% Yellow and 100% Black.
  • If supplying files other than PDF, ensure that you provide all linked images as well as all fonts used in the document.
  • If colour accuracy is essential, please ask for a full production proof.
  • If in doubt, please contact the pre-press department before beginning to create your files.
